Burnt Sienna Art School Berlin: what do users think?

Elisabeth Howland: I have had the great pleasure of taking two different classes with Burnt Sienna Art School over the past two years. Louise Thomas’s idea that this is “yoga for artists” is really true. We have to give ourselves the time to be creative and get dirty with charcoal and paint sometimes, especially when we are all getting so full with the flatness of the digital world. The first course was live drawing, taught by Louise — we met weekly for two months and worked on all different kinds of drawing exercises, some shorter and some longer executions, and culminated in a show at a local gallery. In that time I honed my skills enough to produce a drawing for the cover of my book, which was published last year. Without Louise’s course and support, the cover would have surely had the work of someone other than myself. I took a second course in oil painting this fall, which was a weekend course taught by a colleague of Louise who was trained in Florence in the style of the Old Masters, and it was a lovely introduction to working with oils (I never had). We were a small group and it was a great experience. In short, I can highly recommend gifting yourself or another person this precious time to develop your creative being. It really is priceless and has so many rewards!

Felicia Scheuerecker: Oh so nice! We are looking forward the next times in your studio...it was amazing and such a nice place...i felt like beeing somewhere in florence....dont know exactly why 😊 The art courses are very professional I joined an oil painting course of Louise Thomas and one "how we look at people" drawing course of Jesse Leroy with a portfolio review. Very helpful! A place full of friendly and talented people! Thank you so much! ❤

Anna MacIver: I have done two courses at Burnt Sienna Art school - the winter intro to oil painting course and also one day portrait painting course with Jesse Leroy Smith. I had zero experience in oil painting and Louise was a great teacher who taught me loads. I built on what I learn from that class in the portrait class and was able to create something I was super happy with. I really like how you have the opportunity to be creative and paint what you like and have your own style but getting great advice and technique tuition at them same time. Louise is really good at also creating a great friendly atmosphere so it’s always a really fun day. Looking forward to my next lesson!!:) thanks Louise and Jesse - 5/5 would recommend!!

Elaine Dettmann: Louise is an amazing and supportive teacher. Her studio has a warm renaissance atmosphere and small class sizes. While other drawing courses in Berlin are either very casual and lacking structure, or highly academic and unaffordable, Burnt Sienna Art School offers a comfortable middle for artists of any level. Highly recommended.

Giedrė Juškienė: Louis is a perfect teacher. She is very inspiring and can lift up your self confidence up to the sky. She inspired me not just as painter, but as an artist and person in general. Also her knowledge as a painter is very strong and creative. She gave not advices how to paint, but how to deal with self dissatisfaction while painting, how to inspire yourself. She didn't say any critics, just saw good things in all works. I liked her as a teacher and person very much!

Chantelle Gallow: Louise is an excellent teacher. I had never picked up a paint brush and she gave me enough guidance without feeling like she was painting for me. It is a real treat to be able to paint outside in the fresh air and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to get out of my head and just create something with my hands for a few hours. To anyone who is thinking about doing some courses in life drawing or oil painting I would highly recommend!

Effy Nails: I’m so glad to have found this beaut art school. So far I’ve attended the winter oil course and the portrait in oil workshop and I can’t wait to do more. Louise (and Jesse) have been excellent teachers, enabling and inspiring me to explore painting- something I’ve had on my list for a very long time. Thank you Burnt Sienna!

Enrique Benítez Molina: it was a wonderful life drawing course. the teacher creates a magical atmosphere which makes you let your inner artist out. without having an artistic background and having had bad experiences with other courses i was able to learn, enjoy and love what i drew :)

Carla Gronwald: The studio is like an island of art in Berlin! Love the classes so much I never feel the time goes by. And Louise is the most wonderful teacher you can possibly have :)

Chiara Chierchiè: Louise is an amazing teacher, she puts a lot of care in making everyone be proud of their work!

Berlin Drawing Room: what do users think?

Julia Mota Albuquerque: I recently took a workshop with Ali Fitzgerald and it was absolutely wonderful! I am an illustrator, meaning I am used to working with single images, but I have always admired comic artists who work with multiple panels. Ali’s lessons were super insightful and she had so many simple and efficient tips that helped me actually put my single images together and tell a story with real emotional expressions and a storyline. Highly recommend it to any artists out there who are trying to take a leap into making comics or bringing their stories to life! But if you are a beginner this workshop will also be perfect for you :) Ali is super patient, kind and willing to help with everything you might need.

christine drew: So nice and welcoming and so professional at the same time, my teacher G. is never bored to teach and look at the mistakes one can repeat too often. But with our time and G. 's patience it pays and we make progress, correct bad habits and above all spend very good time, drawing together.
Response: We are so glad you found the workshop valuable. G is indeed fantastic! Hope to see you back soon.

Lindsey Gould: Best art workshops I've ever attended! I really enjoyed a botanical watercolour workshop with Mira, and have attended the Sketchbook Workshop series with G monthly for the past year. It's changed my artistic life by keeping me motivated to create art daily, and I learn so much from G and the other students each class. Best of all, the sketchbook series is completely online right now, so students from around the world can join in! I highly recommend classes from Berlin Drawing Room for students who are beginners, advanced, or anywhere in between :)
Response: Thank you! We are just thrilled to see your work develop!

Michele Villeneuve: Mira is an excellent teacher. I loved the specimens that she chose for the winter botanical series. She was gentle and kind with her appraisals of my work (I was a beginner) and she was open to the needs of her students. I highly recommend this class!
Response: We are so glad to hear that you found the workshop nourishing and helpful! Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

April Gertler: I took the Summer Botanical Watercolor Workshop with Mira O'Brien. It was a such a marvelous experience; clear, precise, informative and wonderful. Although initially slightly hesitant about taking an online class, I was especially impressed! The online nature of the class gave us up close access to watching Mira do demos which was a huge highlight! I would recommend this class to anyone who is either interested in learning about watercolor techniques as a beginner or as someone who has watercolor experience. Mira's enthusiasm for botanical watercolors comes through in so many ways! For each class she prepared wonderful slide shows about plants and techniques - always giving us a context with which to understand that day's class! Take this class! It's marvelous!

Michelle Soule: Mira's Botanical watercolor classes are wonderful on many levels! Not only does one learn watercolor techniques, but also the skills of observation and recording the natural world. Mira is very knowledgeable, inclusive and accepting of all skill levels. It was fun!
Response: Thank you! It was a pleasure to have you in the class and hope to see you soon!

Clare Wigfall: I recently finished Mira’s online Winter Botanical Watercolour series and it’s been a very special experience, not only because the class was wonderful, but also because I signed up together with my eleven-year-old daughter and my mum. I think it’s the first time the Berlin Drawing Room has seen three generations of one family in a class! My mum is in London and we are in Berlin and sadly the pandemic has stopped us from being together for over a year now, so it was especially lovely to be able to feel that we could do something creative together each week. We’ve all loved it and felt it was perfectly tailored to suit all of our levels. Having time to quietly paint together was a real joy, and we’ve learnt so much, not just in terms of technique gleaned from observing Mira’s demonstrations, but also from the introductions she gave at the start of each class which covered the history of botanical art, prominent artists, and different approaches to depicting horticultural specimens. I used to draw and paint a lot, but since having children I had stopped almost completely, even though I’m constantly encouraging my daughters in their artistic pursuits. When the kids were little I used to go along with them to art classes and we’d have fun making a mess with paint, but there aren’t so many opportunities to take a class together as they get older. I’m not really sure why because it’s an amazing way to spend focused time with your child. I’ve loved seeing how far my daughter’s work has progressed during the course, but just as much I’ve really valued how the framework of the class has given me space to return to drawing and painting and remember just how much I love to do it too. It’s great to have a passion we can share together. We're now taking the Bestiarium Sketchbook Series class with G. Caruso and are loving that too.

Norma Bradley: G Caruso’s watercolor workshop was excellent and my first online art workshop. I hadn’t worked with watercolor for many years and I was able to refresh my memory and learn new techniques each week. Each session was recorded on dropbox so I was able to reinforce my learning. Each participant was able to upload their projects and get positive feedback and suggestions. G is an organized, very experienced water-colorist and teacher who shares her passion for the medium. She cares about each student and their progress. The sense of community that developed was such a treat. I live in the USA and worked from my studio. There were students from four other countries. I signed up for another class immediately and hope online classes will continue to be offered.

DON O'BRIEN: Another great class with Mira. She does a great job teaching watercolor technique, and also information about plants and mushrooms. Her passion for plants and watercolor painting comes through loud and clear and is very inspiring. Beginning students were surprised at their progress while producing memorable works of art. Experienced painters developed new techniques. In addition, I left with a greater appreciation and sensitivity toward plants.

Wendy M K Shaw: Mira celebrates her wonder of nature with her students. Whether for beginners or for more advanced participants, her classes provide technical instruction from the blank page and fresh paints to the finished work. Participants gain tips from her meticulous drawings, as well as courage from each other as we each develop our skills. Emotionally soothing and intellectually captivating, these drawing classes are a great investment for developing a new skill or honing an old one!

Mala Ghedia: The lovely Mojca brings her artistic expertise and love for creative expression to her young students in a fun and original way. I’ve been so impressed and delighted by the “works-of-art” my child has brought home! Highly recommend these classes for all children.

Hadil Karawani: Mojca is most amazing! Her artwork with the children is enjoyable and inspiring on many levels! Our son loves to work with her and he produces artwork like we never imagined! I would take her class in a heart beat, if she offered it to adults!

Allie Malkin: Mojca's creativity captivated our son and daughter's attention each and every week. She knew how to bring out the best in them and always contributed her bright energy and positivity. She is a skilled teacher and I can say her class is a must!

Uta Zlatanov: Our daughter, almost 10, has attended Mojca's art classes for three years now land absolutely loves it. Mojca is a fantastic teacher and wonderful person. Thank you for your ongoing inspiration!

Laura Wieland: Mojca is an incredible teacher! Our 6-year-old has been attending Artnuts classes for over a year and brings home the most wonderful creative projects. Portraits in Modigliani style, little dolls made out of wood, collages, foxes made out of papier maché - so many different materials and themes. Artnuts could not come more highly recommended!

Cristina Fishman: My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves ArtNuts and Mojca; her art projects are one of a kind and incredibly creative. This is not a sit down class where you get to draw some simple pictures, but one where you create, build, draw and sculpt out of different materials these beautiful pieces that kids are super proud of and ones that I happily display in our home.

Zanette Ballot: Since Luc has started art classes with Mojca his fine motorskills have improved so much. He never liked drawing, painting or coloring but Mojca managed to create a love for art he now has. Now he wants to take extra art classes at his school and art classes with her. I will be forever grateful to Mojca for helping my son love art!

Julia Karmo: A really special teacher and class! My daughter's taken an Art with Great Masters course with Mojca it was really good- they made some seriously creative drawings, collages and installations. She is still showing off the things they made. We'll be coming again!

Nicole Nauen: My now 7 year old daughter joins Mojca's classes now for 2 years - and is still super excited. Mojca is a great teacher and just a lovely person!

Tina Draščič: This year I was an intern at Artnuts led by it’s founder Mojca Milek. Mojca is a teacher with a lot of ideas and a great sense of aesthetic that reveals itself in projects she’s doing with the kids and also the ones she’s making for herself. Every week she organises three classes where children are divided into different age groups by which she coordinates the level of complexity in the class. Projects are carefully planned and diverse in techniques and materials. They are often inspired by the books she keeps on the shelves in her studio. She encourages children to use their own imagination and express their own style. Every class ends with children making one piece of art, which they proudly take home to show to their parents. She’s a person with a really big heart and loves the children dearly.

BERLIN ART INSTITUTE: what do users think?

Brittani Karhoff: BAI was incredibly helpful in introducing me to the Berlin art scene. I'm in my late 30's, shifting my performance career to focus more on visual art, and have 2 young kids at home. As a new immigrant to Germany, my 3 months at BAI gave me instant community, access to mentorship and guidance, and insider knowledge on galleries, project spaces and other art institutions. Even outside the structured lectures and studio visits, I received regular emails from Stephanie and Ralf with additional exhibit recommendations. There is a lot of space and time to chart your own experience, and I appreciated the many uninterrupted days of studio work time.
Response: Thank you so much Britt; it was a pleasure to host you!

Kailum Graves: The focus on constructive and critical discourse, while still providing a studio space for individual practice, makes the BAI a unique and rare residency program. For me, it was the perfect mix between theory and practice. Moreover, the multidisciplinary model of the program organically facilitated intense open dialogues, small and large group discussions, experimentations, and collaborations (and late-night drinking sessions). On a more personal note, Ralf and Stephanie are personally invested in every participate. They generously put endless time into supporting, inspiring, mentoring, talking, laughing, and sharing with everyone involved. Oh, and the pasta salads are delectable! Thanks for hosting me!

Valeria Secchi: I've just finished my one month stay at Bai, and I'm really satisfied with how the school works. The experience was rich and well articulated, I had the possibility to listen and interact with experienced artists, curators and gallerists. The directors of Bai, Stephanie and Ralph, are just amazing, they put a lot of attention on everybody's needs and they give suggestions to help you grow as an artist. I totally recommend this school where you can have dialogues with interesting people and time for experimentation. The school also gives you the tools to understand and learn more about Berlin's art scene.
Response: Thx so much Valeria; it was a pleasure to host you!

Jacalyn Carley: BAI program is absolutely the best. Do work, get amazing crits, take time for serious discourse, have encounters and lectures/seminar’s with experienced and fascinating people from the art world. THe studios are great, the concept of the program works, and above all, the leaders (Steffi & Ralf) Know the entire artworld and continue to bring their personal energy as well as their endless connections to the art world into the program. I was there on and off for nearly a year. Hope to attend again. I’m not alone in my praise — this concept works.
Response: Thank you very much for the great feedback, it really honors us. We look forward to seeing you again, we will keep in touch ..

samar mohamed: 100% the perfect art place, it’s a great environment so you can see and interact with another artists from different background and the most important thing the BAI team is very very helpful. I highly recommend it as I will repeat it again.
Response: Would be great to having you back!

Ellyse Phillips: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueThe working spaces are large and the interaction with other participants is what makes this residency so valuable. I will definitely be back!
Response: Thank you Ellyse, looking forward to have you back at BAI.

Camila Piana: Amazing place, program and people! I totally recommend it .... best way to learn about art and grow as an artist.
Response: It has been such a pleasure to host you in the BAI Studio Program and see your work grow! Thank you for all your commitment, passion, patience & contributions to make it a success! Looking forward to your exhibition at 404 | BAI next year!

Zak Simpson: Good but let me in next time! 👿

Richard Edens: We paid over 6500€ for a one year course & he (Frank Pieperhoff - Kunstgut Akademie) decided to move the lessons a 2,5h ride outside of Berlin during the year (check address before and now on his website and google) - without giving notice at beginning of the year. He kept the money BUT lost the students and all reputation! For this lawsuits from his former students are being prepared. PLEASE dont make the same mistake many did before, don't move from abroad for his courses and pay the amount of money he is asking for with his Academy. There are many more professional & honest Art Schools out there - good luck!

Yuyi: Cool Academy! I was here for a private tour and exhibition. People are very creative and interesting.

Reggie Woronowicz: Fantastic acrylic painting classes in both English and German! I love coming here and always enjoy the painting motifs. The teachers are always very helpful, the studio has tons of supplies to use, and you get a large canvas to paint. Usually you trace the outline of the motif with transfer paper and then the teacher helps walk you though the steps for painting acrylics. If your German is not fantastic, don’t worry - it’s easy to follow along and most the teachers know some English. Sessions are usually 2.5 hours. They also do other workshops for different art mediums (watercolor, sketching, etc.) I highly recommend trying out a class!

Gina Q: Super nice atmosphere, the course was very instructive. You can conjure up very beautiful works of art as a complete novice or with some experience. I loved you guys. Thank you so much again👍😊

Florian Steiner: Super courses with great attention to detail! I can recommend the painting salon without hesitation. Gladly again!

Caroline Ehrenberg: We spent a wonderful children's birthday party (8 years) with many friends here last year in December with our daughter. The guiding artist was great and was very responsive to the children. All the children had great fun and the works of art, which everyone is very proud of, have had a place of honor in the children's room ever since. I can absolutely recommend it for children who love to paint! Thanks to the Malsalon team

Marcus Schatter: 2 weeks ago my wife gave me a session at the painting salon. Actually, I can't paint, and that's why I was very surprised about all of our results. We had Gustav Klimt's kiss on the program. I can only say that it was a very pleasant atmosphere and the concept of painting a motif by a great painter in one evening under supervision convinced me! It also works great as a gift idea!

Michael Porep: Let us grasp the world of visual art and interpret it ourselves. The reward of self-knowledge greets through the art of understanding. Thank you for your commitment and the tolerance you have lived for your customers.

Niels Moeller: Great idea. Paint to just switch off. Quite authentic, nice place and great artists.

Mel La: It was great fun! Highly recommended, try something different.

Jana M: It's worth it, especially for beginners.

Christoph Hornung: Whoever has never painted is just right. Simply a perfect idea!

Fabian Müller: I did the figure drawing class for beginners with Paola. It was an altogether great experience. The space is really special! Paola was a great teacher, very encouraging and giving helpful hints. We drew from live models from the very start, and there were different models throughout the class, which made for some interesting variation. Would definitely recommend.
Response: Thank you very much Fabian!

Anna De Marzi: I took part in the Basic Figures Drawing Class for Beginners and I loved it! The class is not based on the anatomy of the body but more on how to draw it starting from basic shapes. We also started from the first lesson to draw with a model posing. Paola is a super artist and very helpful teacher and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I would totally recommend it!

Catherine Wu: I attended the beginners figure drawing classes and would highly recommend! The venue is beautiful and Paola is a great teacher.

Sheena McCaugherty: Great drawing class. Really cool space and lovely teacher. Would for sure recommend this experience
Response: Thanks Sheena!

Daria Burdyga: Great drawing class

School of Fine Art and Design, School of Art Berlin: what do users think?

Enrique Molina: im attending to the drawing course and im more than delighted. andrei is the best teacher ever. i get from him proper academic instructions of how to see what i want to draw, how to start, the way to understand shadows, perspective, etc... he is always checking up on every one and giving useful advices. highly recommended

Phillip Wenig: Very friendly staff and very capable teachers who can teach you all kinds of drawing and also software like Photoshop and Illustrator!

Sophia Fischer: I am very happy with my internship in photography and moving images! At the art school, I was warmly welcomed and supported quickly. Will miss the time here very much <3

Ksenia Sizyakova: Great school! I did my apprenticeship as an illustrator here from 2014 to 2017 and can only recommend it to everyone.

Enough is enough: I don't understand how such a successful school can be sooooo dirty??? It's unbelievably dirty in all the rooms, in the toilets, just everywhere.
Response: Hello, we have a cleaner and a caretaker. Of course, if you are there at the end of the day or on a Saturday afternoon, then it could of course be that one or the other toilet is no longer clean. Otherwise, all rooms and the toilets are checked every day. The color stains everywhere are of course excluded from our checklist. If you want to give us more detailed information, you are welcome to call or write to us directly at any time. Thank you, Rita Krioukov

Anina Motte: i study here and am very back a pleasant mess and great individual people.
Response: thanks

Narghiza Adizova: Great teachers! It's fun for young and old. My son is in a course for children up to 6 years old, while I am painting in a course for adults.
Response: Thank you, we are happy

Cob Crawler: Was very happy to get a chance to do my further education here. It was a nicer feeling after eight years to art again and the school combined everything that I loved about it. On one side it was nice to be at the board again with the brush, on the other it was to create digital animations on the computer. You have a really large range of different art disciplines and good contacts who help you find your own way in art!

Alexandra Dolejs: Everyone there is very friendly. The transport connection is great. My child learns illustration at school and is also very well supported by the teachers.
Response: Thanks very much!

Anna Zaretskaya: I finished my three-year education at the art school and I was very satisfied. Very friendly and experienced lecturers and family atmosphere. I was able to acquire many manual skills, learn classic drawing and painting methods and get to know all the programs that designers use, such as Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Among other things, there are exciting workshops, evening courses, life drawing and holiday academies.

vio prico: One of my favorite places to go to! The atmosphere is amazing and professional, the crew is friendly. A lot of creative people come by and the whole event is nicely organized. Best to bring your own artistic equipment but you can also find some there in case you've forgotten. The models are diverse and they pose beautifully, really helpful to understand anatomy! You can learn a lot from people who come by and from the teacher there whom you can talk to about drawing tips and lessons. Strongly recommend it if you are in need of drawing practice and inspiring atmosphere! Also, it's on a boat.

Miia Godwin: The drawers' dream! At the moment due to covid-19 the place is not open, but you can take part in the online streaming classes. The boat is huge, but still it has a very cosy atmosphere with wood burning stove, red velvet and oriental carpets - you get the drift. The themes for the classes vary, so if the nudes aren't your thing, you should check the website for the different courses and themes. Oh yeah, there's a bar too!

Luna Clara: Really nice session. The location is great and helps the creativity to flow. Everyone is super nice and the model did some nice and challenging poses. I’ll definitely come back

Natalie Talmi: Really awesome experience! The bar is on a boat (indoor) and they host life drawing sessions. The guys who run it play great music and are super chill, considering they built the entire establishment with their bare hands and organize the weekly events themselves. The bar is super affordable and they also have extra materials, paper, pencils, erasers, charcoal, drawing boards for anyone who may need. The models vary in experience and gender which means it’s always interesting. They are really open to giving tips or helping out people wanting to learn. Be careful though, in winter you can easily miss out on a good vantage point because it can get quite popular.

Tatjana Schenk: Fantastic team/workshops/location! Honestly, it's always such a pleasure to hang out with the wonderful creatives that gather in the welcoming atmosphere of drink&draw and sketch and learn-(and drink ;) - together. The knowledge of the participans is amazing and everyone welcomes new faces and helps and gives tipps. The heart the d&d team puts into the venue and classes is wonderful. Cheers to all of you!

Taphthartharath Scharthathan: Nice little artist place. The name is the theme. Drink and draw ;)

Fransie Groenendijk: Very fun expierence! We had a bachelorette party here and we had great fun.

Valentine Capian.Moser: Really cool place and Nice people. I love the atmosphere.

Dusia Sobol: Amazing place ☺️

Edouard Noisette: One of the best art community I have ever met. Keep being awesome !

Erlenbach Art School: what do users think?

Sebastian Fried: This man is unprofessional. Insults his students, yells at them, and is also arrogant and self-righteous. Stay away from this "school"!
